Its intensity and aromatic freshness, including spicy vegetal notes, typical of citrus fruits and white flowers, welcome and enhance the traditional dishes of summer cuisine, as if it contained the sun of Sicily: it is Grillo, the ideal wine for the summer, which from year to year establishes itself more and more as an ambassador of a territory. There are approximately 8,500 hectares (data as of 2021) in which Grillo is cultivated on the island, recording a +273% compared to the production of 2004, when there were 2,300 hectares. Through different expressions, Grillo offers a version of itself attributable to its varietal characteristics in each different area where it is produced and, as is typical of a phenotype born and raised in Sicily, it is able to create an interesting synergy in every context. If we compare the bottled Grillo Sicilia DOC in 2017 – i.e. 3,401,676 units – to that of 2022 – i.e. 20,058,504 – we notice an increase of +489%. Furthermore, from the data currently available, already in the 1st half of 2023 there are 12,831,328 bottles, recording an increase of +12% compared to the 1st half of 2022, when 11,440,296 bottles were produced.
We give Grillo, a vine that stands out among the over 70 native varieties of the region – says Antonio Rallo, the President of the Consortium for the Protection of Sicilia DOC wines – the merit of having been one of the main ambassadors of the great value of Sicilia DOC wine in Italy and abroad. A true standard-bearer of the quality of Sicilian wine throughout the world also thanks to its extreme versatility and ability to combine with the traditional dishes of Sicilian and Italian cuisine, enhanced by its intense aromatic charge and organoleptic characteristics capable of fully expressing the terroir of its provenance”.
